8th Graders Experiment in Shenandoah National Park

9/21/2019: Mr. Selner’s eighth grade Earth Science class spent Thursday systematically studying Overall Run Falls in Shenandoah National Park. With the assistance of Tom Waters (Army Corps of Engineers) and Stephen Foster (math and physics teacher) students conducted a number of experiments on Overall Run.

Included in the science activities were measuring the stream’s gradient at different sections of the stream, measuring the stream’s velocity at a high gradient feature, assessing the composition of the stream bed, and sketching the stream course. Finally students measured the depth of a significant pool feature utilizing a grid system to obtain 145 points of data which were transformed into 3-D images of the pool by an Excel program.
